And this is Ari, the tuxedo tabby, in August of 2006. One of the last pictures of him before he began to decline. He died December 19, 2006 at the age of 15 years, 8 months. He lived with diabetes for 6 of his nearly 16 years, but was still alert to the end. He's waiting at the Rainbow Bridge for me now, bossing the other cats and giving the dogs what for. Peace Ari.

10 Things You Can Do to Take Action Against Global Warming

From the Take Action section of the website www.climatecrisis.net

Want to do something to help stop global warming? Here are 10 simple things you can do and how much carbon dioxide you'll save doing them.

Change a light Replacing one regular light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb will save 150 pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Drive Less Walk, bike, carpool or take mass transit more often. You'll save one pound of carbon dioxide for every mile you don't drive!

Recycle more You can save 2,400 pounds of carbon dioxide per year by recycling just half of your household waste.

Check your tires Keeping your tires inflated properly can improve gas mileage by more than 3%. Every gallon of gasoline saved keeps 20 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere!

Use less hot water It takes a lot of energy to heat water. Use less hot water by installing a low flow showerhead (350 pounds of CO2 saved per year) and washing your clothes in cold or warm water (500 pounds saved per year).

Avoid products with a lot of packaging You can save 1,200 pounds of carbon dioxide if you cut down your garbage by 10%.

Adjust your thermostat Move your thermostat down just 2 degrees in winter and up 2 degrees in summer. You could save about 2,000 pounds of carbon dioxide a year with this simple adjustment.

Plant a tree A single tree will absorb one ton of carbon dioxide over its lifetime.

Turn off electronic devices Simply turning off your television, DVD player, stereo, and computer when you're not using them will save you thousands of pounds of carbon dioxide a year.

Spread the word! Tell everyone you know about these simple ways to Take Action!

The Life of Kat

imageMarried 15+ years, 1 DD age 14 in 2008, stitcher for 30+ years, BA in anthro, Masters in Library Science.
Family includes 3 cats and one dog. (We lost our oldest cat late in 2006)... image In additon, I'm an unrequited horse-crazy girl who never grew up, and still wishes for a horse of my own! My main hobby is stitching (of course!). I stitch on a rotation, love designs by Teresa Wentzler, Crossed Wing, and Chatelaine, and like making quilts on occasion. I also love reading, chocolate, and hanging out with DH and DD and the pets. I volunteer with a local environmental group, and have been known to do a little subversive bird watching!
I also follow Duke Basketball, and Carolina Hurricanes hockey, Stanley Cup champs for 2006! Go 'Canes! image

  1. Majestic Eagle progress report...

    08/18/08 17:43:04 | 0 Comments

image Here's a progress report on my Majestic Eagle (a Sunset/Dimensions kit)...~25 hours in August. The lower right corner with the tree is done, just the top branches and the bs on the wings left! Moving on to the next entry in the Rotation Relay after a couple of new starts....
    image
The first....I started the San-Man August Blackwork today in the Sprint category of the Stitching Olympics. That is my 4th start this month! image

    image Olympic Report!
imageCan't forget to mention the US Equestrian Show Jumping Team at the Olympics...Winners of GOLD!
imageHave to give kudos to the Canadians for their Silver too...came from behind to force a jump-off and but for a block off the wall.....happy for Ian Miller, (Captain Canada!)....61 years old, in his 9th Olympics and he finally wins a medal!

Congrats to all! (and lots of carrots for the horses!) image

  2. Stitching Olympics again....

    08/14/08 10:23:03 | 1 Comments

image I finished this last night (while watching Olympics, of course!) and got the picture uploaded today....it is Always & Forever by Little House Needleworks. Stitched on R&R linen with Weeks floss (full 5 yd. skein plus 1 & 1/2 yards from second one). Finally I have a wedding sampler, after almost 16 years of marriage! image

    image

Now back to my eagle......and more Olympics! imageimage

  3. More Stitching Olympics...

    08/12/08 11:04:46 | 0 Comments

image Here's another entry in the Stitching Olympics! image

This is San-Man's Americana Birdhouses, stitched together on 14ct ice blue aida. I finished it 8/11/08 while watching the US men's gymnastics team win the Bronze metal in the team competition!
(also saw Gina Miles win the Silver in Individual Eventing in the Equestrian Competition today!) image

    image
Later today I'm going to get out my Majestic Eagle (the Olympics are so inspiring!) and try and get him finished this month! Maybe Michael Phelps can win a few more swimming Gold medals to keep me stitching! image

  4. Olympics!

    08/10/08 12:33:37 | 0 Comments

image Wow! I have been really enjoying the Olympic coverage so far (could do with less beach volleyball however!). The opening ceremonies were amazing, absolutely amazing! I figured out how to watch events online and have been able to see some of the Equestrian 3-day eventing dressage portion...tomorrow there will be cross country! Can't wait till they get to the regular Dressage competion, and my favorite part...Freestyle Dressage!
Then there is the Jumping, which starts on Friday, the 15th.
imageBest part so far has been the fabulous Michael Phelps setting another world record in swimming.....move over Tiger Woods....there's a new phenom in town!

image I'm also participating in The Wagon's Stitching Olympics, with one piece (the August towel) in the Sprint competition completed so far. I'm waiting on floss from NN to finish my second entry, so I started SanMan's Patriotic Birdhouses last night. For the last couple of days, I have been working on another entry in the category of Rotation Relay, finishing part 7 of Papillon's "How Does Your Garden Grow?" mystery sampler on Friday, and part 8 yesterday afternoon. Here it is through pt. 8....I stitched roughly 6 hours on each part...it goes quickly!
    image
I'm also planning on working on my Majestic Eagle, and my Holland Landscapes in Rotation Relay category as well. I'd like to try and do some finishing for the Finish Line category, but we will see how much time I have. I'm sorta like one of those little countries in the Olympics....not much chance to win a medal, but enjoying the experience! image

  5. Latest finish....

    08/06/08 09:02:58 | 1 Comments

image Here's my latest finish, another birdie towel from the SanMan pattern Dinky Dozen, for August!

    image clickable pic
Started on 7/31/08 while traveling to my uncle's funeral, and completed on 8/2/08. Also started another piece while I was visiting with the relatives. Should be done with that one soon and will post again. I'm still trying to catch up on my board reading and emails. For some reason I'd rather stitch! Back later.....image
